Canyon's Story

Canyon’s Journey

Canyon’s journey began much like that of his siblings—Misty, Star, and April—wild, young, and surviving in Butte County near the Nimshew Gold Mine at the bottom of the canyon.

When we rescued Canyon, he was malnourished and suffering from a painful quarter crack in his front hoof. But with patience, compassion, and a great deal of loving care, he healed beautifully. Over time, he not only became sound again, but also learned to trust the people around him—especially children. Love became the bridge that helped Canyon understand he was safe, cherished, and finally home.

He grew into a spirited and joyful horse who loved to run and play across the ranch with his family and herd mates. Canyon embraced life with energy and heart, and it was clear he found happiness in the freedom, care, and companionship he had here.

In early 2026, just shy of 17 years old, Canyon passed suddenly from an aortic embolism. His loss was swift and deeply heartbreaking. For Mark, who witnessed it, the shock was profound—especially because Canyon had never known a bad day with us on the ranch. He loved his life here, and we loved sharing it with him.

Canyon’s time with us was far too short, but his story is one of rescue, healing, trust, and love. He will always be remembered, and he will be deeply missed.
